How to find customers on Reddit (without getting banned)

Reddit is one of the few places on the internet where your potential customers say exactly what they want, in their own words, for free. The problem isn't access — it's finding the right communities and showing up in a way that doesn't get you banned.

Why Reddit is different

Unlike Twitter or LinkedIn, Reddit communities are organized around problems, not identities. A subreddit like r/freelance isn't "freelancers" — it's "people actively thinking about freelancing problems right now." That's a fundamentally different audience than a professional network.

When someone posts "how do you handle late payments?" in r/freelance, they're not browsing — they have an active problem. That's the moment to show up.

Step 1: Find the right subreddits

Look for communities that have between 10k and 500k members. Large communities (over 1 million) have strict self-promotion rules and your posts get buried. Small communities under 10k are often low-traffic.

Step 2: Search before you post

Before you ever post anything, spend a week reading. Search the subreddit for your product category. Look for posts where people describe problems your product solves. Read the top comments. You're building a mental model of what language your customers use.

Step 3: Show up when someone is mid-problem

What not to do
